I have lived with many Zen masters—all of them cats.
— Eckhart Tolle, Contemporary Spiritual Teacher

Welcome! I am Francesca Mazzotti, the owner of Pure Yin Yoga and Private Yoga Perth.

I taught my first yoga class in Italy, as I lived there for 16 years. I remember the awkward moment during that class when I couldn’t remember how to say “quadriceps” in Italian. Despite its challenges, teaching cross-culturally was very rewarding. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and Italian Language & Literature from UWA. A future goal, related to the integration of the body, heart and mind, is a degree in Transpersonal Psychology. I am also particularly interested in the gut-brain axis, and how gut health affects mental health. The ancient term for this multi-dimensional integration is actually the simple word, yoga.

I was exposed to yoga as a child through my mother, but only dabbled in it during my teens and early twenties. In Italy I developed chronic lower back pain as a result of an injury. I discovered Bikram Yoga, and practised almost daily for several years. I also saw every type of allopathic doctor, and tried alternative treatments, to little avail. Eventually, someone mentioned this “Yin Yoga” thing. I tried it, and began a daily 90-minute practice. My physical pain was completely eradicated within two weeks. I wanted to share Yin Yoga’s potential for healing with others, and that is what prompted me to pursue the teaching path. I offer my teaching from a nurturing and grounded place, in a way that is accessible, helpful and meaningful.

I am registered with Yoga Australia. I am also registered with Yoga Alliance Australia as a RYT YIN 250 LVL1, which is a professional credential that shows the public that my teacher trainings have been in line with the Yin Yoga principles and practice created and developed by Yin Yoga co-founder, Paul Grilley. I have chosen to train vertically, focusing exclusively on Yin Yoga, rather than having Yin as an adjunct to more dynamic styles.

My initial Yin Yoga teacher training consisted of 200 hours under the tutelage of Jo Phee and Joe Barnett, in 2016. This included a module of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have since completed the Insight Yoga Institute’s primary and secondary level trainings with Yin Yoga co-founder, Sarah Powers (100 hours), in which Yoga, Mindfulness, (secular) Buddhism and Psychology are interwoven into an integral practice. I have been admitted into the IYI’s 500-hour certification programme, which further explores these themes and practices. I am also currently undertaking a 50-hour training in Experiential Anatomy with Judith Hanson Lasater.

Importantly, I maintain my own practices of Yin Yoga, mindfulness meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises) and self-inquiry. I began meditating after observing my two felines, and concluding that I wanted what they had: equanimity. Furthermore, after experiencing adrenal fatigue in the past and the sense of unrelenting exhaustion that is symptomatic of the condition, I included Restorative Yoga in my own daily self-care practices.

WHY YOU MIGHT ENJOY HAVING ME AS YOUR YOGA TEACHER:

I keep my classes small, and I place a heavy emphasis on teaching you how to adapt the yoga to YOUR body. This ensures my classes are inclusive, so when I say they are for EVERY body, it’s actually true! I am a Yin-specialised teacher, and my primary goal is to share the healing and therapeutic benefits of this practice. I teach from the heart and personal experience because, in the words of my teacher, Sarah Powers, when we, as teachers, develop a skilful self-practice, over time, our teaching simply becomes an extension of our personal exploration, the cultivation that comes from repetition.

Warmly,

Francesca
